Many parents in Palm Beach County feel stretched thin balancing work, school, activities, and family responsibilities. Even when doing their best, it is common to wonder whether enough time is being spent with their children. Research shows the answer is not about spending more time, but about making the time you have more meaningful.
A study published in the Journal of Marriage and Family found that for children ages 3 to 11, the total amount of time caregivers spend with them has little impact on long-term outcomes. Instead, children benefit most from moments of genuine connection. Simply being together while feeling stressed, rushed, or emotionally drained does not provide the same benefit as focused, engaged interaction.
Quality time includes shared activities such as reading together, eating meals without distractions, and having one-on-one conversations. These moments support emotional regulation, attachment, and healthy development. Children are highly sensitive to caregiver stress, which means emotionally present interactions are more beneficial than longer periods of distracted time.
Research does show one important exception. During adolescence, the amount of time spent with parents becomes more impactful. Teens who spend regular time engaged with their parents show lower rates of risky behaviors, including substance use and delinquency. Shared family time, especially meals, has been linked to healthier decision-making and stronger relationships.
